EcoCAR 2: Plugging In to the Future named Mississippi State University, with its series-parallel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle design, the Year One winner at the EcoCAR 2012 Competition in Los Angeles. The 15 universities competing in EcoCAR 2 gathered for six days of judged competition for $100,000 in prize money.

Students from Mississippi State University placed first in the 2010 EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge finals in San Diego, Calif. after designing and building an biodiesel extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). Virginia Tech earned second place with an ethanol EREV design and Penn State came in third place building a biodiesel EREV.

University students from The Ohio State University earned top honors at the 2009 finals of the EcoCAR : The NeXt Challenge competition in Toronto, Canada for their design of a Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). The Ohio State’s design was powered by a 1.8-liter liter engine and fueled by E85 ethanol. Plug-in capability.

EcoCAR teams will utilize a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu donated by General Motors as the integration platform for their advanced vehicle design. Student designs will consider the well-to-wheel (WTW) impact of fuel use and select renewable fuels such as hydrogen, E85 (85% ethanol), or B20 (20% biodiesel).
