Petrol vehicle volumes were 4x to 5x recent seasonal norms. So €4,100 more overall, compared to its cost in December.

With two Electric cars, at the time a Nissan Lean and Mitsubishi Outlander, we use a considerable amount of electricity but not much petrol, so already we were a reasonable way down the less CO2 road. According to the Department for Business, the average cost for standard electricity in the UK in 2020 was 17.2p/kWh.

The Tesla Model Y was the month’s bestselling plugin, and second overall auto (behind the VW Golf). Overall auto market volume growth came on the back of sales growth of HEVs, BEVs, and Petrols. BEVs grew volume by 14.7%, and Petrols by 8.9%. Note that this isn’t even an end of quarter month, Tesla’s habitual peak.

Some electric cars, like the Tesla Model S Long Range , are capable of covering more than 400 miles without needing to top up. It was only around 15 years ago that EVs could barely travel 50 miles before running out of juice. Unless, perhaps, you’re getting a Tesla, in which case you’ll probably collect it directly from them.

It is thought that the cars that Renault is building to function with the Better Place model will have the ability to have its power supply swapped and the newly announced Tesla Model S is said to also incorporate this concept. No single vehicle does it all even in todays petrol world. Battery swapping has its critics.
