Clean Fleet Report got a chance to sample the model at a recent media event in San Diego. Fuel economy for the Corolla Cross Hybrid is rated at 45 mpg city/38 highway with a combined average of 42. It combines a 2.0-liter, Running on regular unleaded, the hybrid system is designed to err on the side of fuel efficiency.

After a couple hours driving the VF 8 in San Diego County, here are our initial thoughts. Additional charging is through regenerative braking that converts kinetic energy into electricity when braking or coasting. The battery charge and mileage range are metered in realtime by a readout on the center touchscreen.

The EPA rates fuel economy, when using the hybrid gasoline-only engine at 30 miles per gallon. This is excellent fuel economy for a 5,010-pound nicely styled shoe box. The regenerative braking system, which recharges the 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, converts kinetic energy into electricity when braking or coasting.
