In the near-term (2011), lithium-ion batteries could grow to represent about 21% of the hybrid and EV advanced battery market, according to Dr. Menahem Anderman, President of Advanced Automotive Batteries and the organizer of last week’s Advanced Automotive Battery Conference 2009. PHEVs and EREVs require $7/gallon.

Although consumer tax credits for PHEVs enjoyed bipartisan support in both houses of Congress, concerns over other tax portions of the energy bill resulted in the entire tax package being removed from the original bill.

The federal government has also increased mileage standards for new passenger cars and light trucks to a fleet average of 49 mpg in model year 2026 , up from 41 mpg today. With 11 percent of all US new light-duty vehicles sold in the state annually, or around 2 million vehicles, its environmental policies have market clout.
