Of the 11 PHEVs: 10 are extended range electric vehicles—Toyota’s concept Prius PHEV is the only non-series hybrid plug-in. 9 (82%) are production prototypes or concepts; only the Fisker Karma and Karma-S are in production or near production. (Tesla is also displaying its battery pack, for a 43 rd entry.).

It doesn’t make its debut until next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show, but we’ve got the inside scoop on the new Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Concept. The vehicle will support an all-electric range of 12.4miles at speeds up to 62mph.

So the concept of a heat pump is that the heat you want to remove from the engine can be used somewhere the heat is required like heating the car. GM believes it can help speed up charging and acceleration and extend range. The Toyota Prius Prime and most Volkswagen e-Golf models do as well.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At these prices, people are buying the "environmental feature" -- they want to be among the first owners of the worlds cleanest extended-range vehicles. They are early adopters, buying "Version 1.0"

After generating mountains of buzz since the Volt's debut as a concept 21 months ago, Chevy finally took the wraps off the production version of the car this morning. It’s creating a new vehicle called an extended-range electric vehicle." The Volt is not a hybrid, and it’s not a plug-in hybrid.
