The partnership involves using select conventional vessels from EPS’ existing tanker fleet that use MAN engines to be retrofitted, allowing them to be powered by methanol and ammonia which will be supplied by OCI. Also, EPS will construct newbuild vessels with MAN engines powered by the same two alternative marine fuels.

The turbocharged concept allows reaching engine speeds of 6,000 rpm, with a high indicated efficiency of 45% along with clean combustion; power density at 6,000 rpm is 64 kW, with 300 kPa intake pressure. High-pressure air supplied from a compressed air storage tank is jetted into the power cylinder through a high-pressure air jet system near TDC. It compresses the in-cylinder premixture, leading to the autoignition of the local region.
