Another of the five goals is for the Department of the Navy to reduce petroleum use in its 50,000 strong commercial fleet by half by 2015. Moving to biofuels and electric vehicles will benefit the local communities where our bases are located and will spur adoption of similar vehicles in those neighborhoods.

The eyes of the world may be on developments in electric and hybrid car engineering, but according to Cleantech research firm Pike Research, it is a surge in the number of natural gas vehicles on the road that we should be looking out for. It has also forecast that the market will grow globally at a rate of 5.5 per cent between 2008 and 2015.

In the US, the MIT report notes, only 0.15% of natural as is used as a vehicle transportation fuel; 32% of consumption is in the industrial sector, and 35% is in the residential and commercial sectors. Globally, natural gas vehicles are a small fraction, on the order of 1%, of the close to 900 million vehicles in the vehicle parc.
