Maximum gasoline sulfur limits. A trio of European countries and one from South America made major strides in reducing their levels of sulfur content in gasoline, allowing them to advance in the annual global ranking published by Hart Energy’s International Fuel Quality Center (IFQC). Sulfur is found naturally in crude oil.

The US Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is working with Ecopetrol, the largest oil company in Colombia, to process the residue from sugar cane and palm oil harvesting into fuel ethanol for blending with gasoline. Colombia has an abundance of biomass in the form of sugar cane.

Indonesia and Malaysia will more than double production of palm oil biodiesel, while Germany will remain the largest producer of biofuels in Europe, according to the analysis. First generation ethanol, palm oil biodiesel and rapeseed biodiesel from Europe continue to be the dominant biofuels produced.

Studies for the project developed in partnership with Portuguese company Galp Energia, which calls for the annual production of 330,000 cubic meters (330 million liters, 87 million gallons US) of vegetable oil in Brazil and 320,000 cubic meters (320 million liters, 85 million gallons US) of biodiesel in Portugal, will be continued.

Fats and greases and inedible oils are opportunity feedstocks, but the US supply of fats and greases is probably on the order of less than 10 million barrels, closer to 1-2 million barrels on an annual basis.
