Battelle will address the growing demand for subsurface brine disposal from oil and gas production in the Northern Appalachian Basin (in Ohio and neighboring states) during the next two years. The projects are co-funded by The Development Services Agency's Ohio Coal Development Office (OCDO) for promoting clean use of Ohio coals.

The projects will develop technologies for use in a new generation of advanced turbines that operate using coal-derived synthesis gas (syngas) and high hydrogen content (HHC) fuels. This project will assess flashback and the subsequent flameholding tendencies associated with geometric features found within gas turbine premixers.

Coal supplies nearly 50% of domestic electricity. In order for low-cost electricity from coal-fired power plants to remain available, the DOE said, economical methods for capturing and storing the greenhouse gas emissions from these plants must be developed. The second largest contributor was the Ohio Coal Development Office and the remainder of funding came from private contributions from some of the other 35-plus members of the MRCSP. It is critical to engage the public, legislature, regulators, and industry in project implementation and in sharing the results of the research.

Biomass is mixed with hot sand (1,800 ºF), turning it into product gas and residual char. A small amount of steam and the rapid release product gas provides the conveying force for the reaction. Residual char and cooled sand (1,500 ºF) are separated from the product gas by a cyclone separator and discharged to the combustor.
