The re-engineered diesel engine now has an output of 40kW - that’s 7kW more than its predecessor; while the three-cylinder engine delivers maximum torque of 130Nm - an increase of 18 per cent compared to the previous model. Perhaps most amazingly however, despite the improvements in power, there has been no reduction in fuel economy.

The plan, announced on Tuesday, 19 May at the C40 Climate Change Summit in Seoul, promises a range of measures to put at least 100,000 electric vehicles on London’s roads as soon as possible, from investment in re-charging infrastructure to financial incentives for consumers. The average journey in London is just four miles.

GM will leapfrog Toyota and Honda by providing an electric car to the masses by the end of next year. The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. The car is expected to cost around $40,000.
