A methanation plant expansion to the existing power-to-gas (PtG) facility in Falkenhagen, Germany has officially opened as part of the international €28-million (US$33.5-million) While the current facility feeds pure hydrogen (“WindGas”) directly into the gas grid, the new methanation plant provides for the generation of “green” methane.

Swiss research intsitute Empa’s future mobility demonstrator, “move”, is investigating three paths for CO 2 reduction in road traffic—electric mobility, hydrogen mobility and synthetic fuels—against the background of a rapidly changing energy system. Both hydrogen production and methanization continuously generate waste heat.

So if governments don’t want to see their greenhouse gas reduction targets go up in smoke, they have to take measures to dampen demand for transport. 120 g/km by 2012, decreasing to 80 g/km by 2020 and 60 g/km by 2025, in the EU27 plus the EFTA countries Norway and Switzerland. 2012 objective plus a 95 g/km target for 2020 in the EU27.

The hydrogen required, in turn, is generated from water with the help of renewable electric power. Analyses to determine the synthesized fuel’s ecological footprint, its potential contribution to greenhouse gas reduction in Switzerland, and the economic viability of the manufacturing process are also important parts of the project.
