The federal government’s tough new fuel efficiency standard has been endorsed by Hyundai – but with provisos. The Australian arm of the Korean auto giant wants increased reward for selling zero emissions vehicles in the form of ‘super credits’ so it can keep cheaper C02-emitting petrol and hybrid models in its showrooms longer.

Hyundai Motor Corporation has received more than 1,000 pre-sale orders for the Avente/Elantra LPI hybrid since June 17 ahead of the car going on sale in South Korea on July 8. The LPI Hybrid qualifies as a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle and has a fuel economy rating of 17.8km/l (42mpg) - the petrol equivalent fuel economy is 51mpg.

Keep your eyes on Hyundai in the coming weeks. First is the ix-Metro, a new hybrid electric CUV concept for the sub-B segment that promises carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at a meagre 80g/km. The ix-Metro will be powered by an inline three-cylinder, 1.0litre petrol engine with direct injection, dual CVVT and turbocharging.

Locally, Toyota has yet to even put a BEV on-sale and, of course, it makes a fortune out of CO2 and particulate-emitting diesel SUVs and utes. In response, Toyota points to the thousands of petrol-electric hybrids it has sold here and overseas. And it has confirmed the bZ4X BEV launches in early 2024 in Australia. But that’s 2024.

We would recommend signalling a phase-out date for new petrol vehicles between 2030 and 2032, and confirming that in law in 2024/2025. On the demand side, an ICE phase-out is easy to communicate to consumers, which will increase the perception that petrol-powered vehicles are becoming socially unacceptable.

Hyundai Partnering with Korean battery companies for hybrids. They will buy a car and rent or lease the battery and the cost of leasing the battery will be the same as, or less than, the cost theyre paying today for petrol. Doubts PHEVs have environmental benefits. No known plug-ins being planned or on the road.

It’s the first Kia to the use the modular E-GMP platform, which is designed specifically for EVs, and will be shared with Kia parent Hyundai, its Ioniq EV brand, and the Genesis luxury brand. In a press release, Kia called the exterior design “crossover inspired,” but the EV6’s sleek lines are still quite car-like.
