North Dakota-based Red Trail Energy (RTE), which since 2007 has operated an ethanol production facility with annual production of about 60 million gallons per year, is proposing sequestration of CO 2 produced from starch fermentation to lower the overall carbon intensity of the fuel for the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS).

We are beginning to get a sense of regional variation in methane emissions from natural gas production. The gas fields we studied for this paper produced about 20% of the natural gas in the United States, and more than half the shale gas, so this moves us closer to understanding methane leaks from US natural gas production.

Shale oil production generates greenhouse gas emissions at levels similar to conventional crude oil production, according to a pair of new studies released by the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory. These are shale formations with low permeability and must be hydraulically fractured to produce oil and gas.

In the US, the Alberta Clipper Pipeline will extend 326 miles from the US-Canadian border near Neche, North Dakota across northern Minnesota to an Enbridge terminal in Superior, Wisconsin.
