Transport continues to contribute disproportionally to Europe’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, poor air quality and noise, and still uses the least efficient modes to move people and goods according to a new report from the European Environmental Agency (EEA).

The higher share of gas led to an improved carbon intensity of fossil fuel consumption in many Member States. Other findings include: Emissions were higher in most of the key sectors in 2010, particularly those sectors relying on fossil-fuel combustion. Spain, Greece and Portugal again reported lower GHG emissions in 2010.

The global merchant fleet currently consumes around 330 million tonnes of fuel annually, 80-85 per cent of which is residual fuel with high sulfur content.
