California is a proponent of diversifying the fuels used to power transportation. These funds were used to support projects that reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions by using alternative fuels.

These projects put more than 9,000 alternative fuel and energy-efficient light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles on the road, and establish 542 refueling locations across the country. The vehicles and infrastructure being funded include the use of natural and renewable gas, propane, ethanol, biodiesel, electricity, and hybrid technologies.
