As worthy as all that is, it’s the plans for the electric cars that are the really interesting bit for us. The Emira is going into production to replace three Lotus petrol mainstays, the Exige, Elise and Evora. The first electric Lotus was the Evija hypercar that bowed in 2019 and starts customer deliveries in 2022.

I t wasn't that long ago that I remember a Chrysler ad that bragged about how its new Charger, with the big V 8, was a hybrid. Now, the very ungreen Chrysler is changing its tune. In the last few weeks, not only has Chrysler made announcements, so has Mazda, Hyundai, and Nissan. it burned gas and rubber.

As the major automakers race to put electric vehicles into showrooms, they are spending money like it’s going out of fashion. According to reports, General Motors has splashed out around $1billion developing the Chevrolet Volt, while Chrysler hopes to invest around $448million in its electric vehicle programme.

It is probably possible to make a 20k electric smart that outperforms most other cars on the road in everything except range and top speed. The automotive industry is still trying to make electric cars as expensive and inefficient as they possibly can, and its a tough deal because the electronics industry is going the other way.

Daimler/Mercedes Took over Daimler/Chrysler Sprinter PHEV program. Volkswagen CEO says "Future belongs to electric cars," has gained German government support for development. Plug-in hybrids make little sense in a car with current battery technology," he said. People wont buy a full car.
