The current-generation Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid may acquire a new identity for the Chinese market. General Motors sold the first-generation Volt under different brands in various international markets. So far it hasn't continued that practice with the second-generation version, which went on sale in the U.S.

Digital technology companies often test technology on customers before it is ready for sale. General Motors on Dec. 22 stopped sales of its newly launched Chevrolet Blazer EV after customers complained of software-related glitches. For automakers, that has not been the norm so far.

The battery-powered cars that Chinese companies are showing are intended to be much less expensive than those planned by big foreign companies. Great Wall Motor Co., Those prices are much lower than that of General Motors Corp.s Brilliance Jinbei Automobile Co. and Chery Automobile Co. in late 2010. Prius hybrid.
