The morning session started out with an hour long press conference, the highlight being the unveiling of the Volt’s 230 mpg preliminary EPA city fuel economy finding ( earlier post ), as well as a tour showing selected elements from the studios of the four GM North American brands: Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac. The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

Road Test: 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin AWD Ultimate The First Volvo Compact SUV Coupe EV The 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge was the first electric-only and the smallest SUV from Volvo, falling in-line with the EX90 and XC40 Recharge. The EPA rates the C40 Recharge Twin AWD at 226 all-electric miles (AER) with an efficiency of 39 kWh per 100 miles.

Choosing “best of” or “most important” new cars is always dicey, and doubly so with electric vehicles. We’re not holding our breath for that mythical $30,000 Chevrolet Equinox EV, but we figured retail versions of Chevy’s Silverado EV pickup truck and Blazer EV SUV would have reached the market by now. Now we’ve driven both.

After that, an onboard gasoline generator kicks on to recharge the battery, extending the range by 250 miles between fill-ups. The battery is similar to the one selected for the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid due out in November of 2010. To go with its performance, the car carries a hefty price tag of $87,000.
