The final diesel-powered model was an XC90, a large SUV with a turbocharged inline 2-liter four-cylinder engine, which rolled off its production line yesterday in Torslanda, Sweden. In the US, diesel never had the same traction, due the abundance of cheap gas. Petrol-burning engines are soon to see the same fate.

So instead it’s hybrid and EV tech for Kia’s new entry-level electrified SUV. The compact SUV sits under the EV6 from a pricing perspective. Much has been achieved through fakery – ‘petrol’ engine note and gear shifts included – but there’s been no reason to hide this. This would be typical of most track sessions with a petrol performance car, really. 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N I’m happy to report there’s three big ticks awarded.

Striking thing, this electric SUV-cum-wagon. I bet the brakes would take a pasting, and those 21-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 4s aren’t going to be cheap to replace after a few track sessions. It’s personal preference, but I’m also more drawn to the Ioniq 5’s retro looks than the more extrovert EV6 GT.

None of this quartet is cheap, but all are towards the value end of the EV market. It’s fine up front, each person cocooned in an upmarket cabin with seats that hug in all the right places.
