For all the media hype around people potentially switching back to petrol or ditching the thought of an EV, it is important to remember that this is still very much a supply-constrained market. Following rises in the cost of electricity, the business case for domestic solar has never been stronger in the post-subsidy era.

For a plug-in hybrid it is, but those prices are some $15,000 more than the equivalent Outlander petrol versions. Is it good value?

The journey data gathered is already showing that the current generation of vehicles are cheap to run as well as being comparable to petrol and diesel vehicles for speed, ease of use and daily journey distance.

In addition, it is subject to similar refining, storage and distribution costs currently associated with petrol and diesel, including upstream CO2 emissions where the electricity required is usually generated from fossil fuels. Hence its supply would not be cheap, renewable nor sustainable in the long term.

Hearts and minds But he admits that lack of awareness is not the only thing preventing a sceptical public from seeing EVs as a feasible alternative to the petrol and diesel cars they know and love. The cost of ownership for EVs is still quite high. The cost of batteries is not a problem when this is organized in the right way.

With the recent UK Government announcement to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel powered vehicles by 2030 , the switch to EVs is inevitable.

Electric cars and a smart electric grid have a bright future, according to panelists at a roundtable discussion on the subject that I attended last Friday in Boston. “I Vehicle-to-grid is, I believe, the salvation of the automotive industry in the United States,” declared Marc Spitzer, an agency commissioner who was also on the panel.
