According to the official VFACTS figures, there were 3330 examples of the battery electric SUV sold in Australia last month. Hybrid mainstay Toyota remains the top-selling brand in Australia head of Mazda and Ford. Chinese cars sit number three behind Japan and Thailand in terms of popularity in Australia.

BYD ute BYD ute patent shows what the EV ute will look like BYD is the biggest threat to Tesla globally and it’s also shaping up to give the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger something to worry about with a new ute. Toyota showed off a concept car called the EPU (or electric pick-up) alongside an electric version of the LandCruiser.

Tesla briefly entered the list of top sellers, with the Model Y also topping the SUV sales charts in September. But I’m also curious to see how Toyota fights back in the EV space. The proof is already on Australian roads in the form of the BYD Atto 3 compact SUV. I’ll chuck the Toyota bZ4X onto the wish list as well.

Toyota, Volkswagen and Subaru are chief among them. 4, the Q4 e-Tron will be available in a regular SUV body style or a sleeker Sportback, each with a 77kWh battery. It’s the former that will show up first but the latter is more interesting because as a mid-sized SUV it would provide more firepower against the Tesla Model Y.
