Alternative fuel technologies have been embraced in Seattle, after the city was awarded a $1.4million grant from the US Department of Energy to enhance its fleet of green vehicles. It will also pick up $500,000 for the installation of electric vehicle charging stations.

The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Grant Programme (IGP) offers companies cash towards refuelling infrastructure for low carbon vehicles, such as electric vehicles, hydrogen or natural gas or biogas. For fleets, the cost of installing refuelling or recharging infrastructure represents a major barrier to switching fuel use.

The new rechargeable lithium-ion battery plant to based within Nissan’s established plant on Washington Road will be Nissan’s European Centre of Excellence for Battery Manufacturing. Low Carbon Economic Areas (LCEAs) were introduced in the Government’s Low Carbon Industrial Strategy last week.
