Tesla, VW, BYD, Ford and others have plans to build giant gigafactories. ​Rechargeable sodium-ion batteries are similar in construction to lithium-ion ones. Read the C&EN research here Lithium right now is very expensive and Sodium is quite cheap. The aim is to build batteries at a large scale to reduce prices.

Last fall, Buffett’s MidAmerican Energy Holdings unit of Berkshire Hathaway (Stock Quote: BRK.A ) paid $230 million for a 10% stake in BYD Auto (short for “build your dreams”), based in Shenzhen, China. market in 2011, along with a plug-in hybrid model, the F6DM. This has caught Buffett’s attention—and his money.
