This past week was certainly quite a whirlwind of EV news and developments from Volvo’s plans to end production of ICE vehicles by 2030, yet another proposal to reform the federal EV tax credit, chip shortages, Washington state’s plans to ban ICE vehicles by 2030, Lucid Air delay, Fisker to partner with Foxconn, and much, much more.

Sinclair believes that in order for California to reach its 2035 EV sales mandate , and for other states to increase the EV market share, EV manufacturers must move away from sedans and luxury models, and toward more affordable, family-friendly minivans, crossovers, and SUVs. On March 20, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the final vehicle standards for cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs. For light-duty vehicles such as cars, pickups, and SUVs, the 2032 goal is that the fleet average is 85 grams/mile of CO 2. Will everyone need to buy an EV? EPA standards aren’t new.

There is also a push to make those who own SUVs pay a steep annual registration fee to discourage their ownership, as is happening in Washington, D.C. Additionally, there are also price caps on the EVs that are eligible,—$55,000 for autos and $80,000 for SUVs or vans. Thereafter, the percentages go up by 10 percentage points each year.

The need to transition off of gas- and diesel-powered fuels is clear if we want to reduce pollution, carbon omissions, and lessen the impact of cars on climate change. All new non-commercial vehicles that are below a certain MPG or other efficiency standard should have a significant tax that increases for each MPG under the threshold.
