Unlike those you may have grown accustomed to seeing, many of these stations don’t just charge electric cars—they can also send power from vehicle batteries to the local utility grid for use by homes and businesses. Debates over the feasibility and value of such vehicle-to-grid technology go back decades. This is good for the grid.

Last week, as part of the little known and unadvertised “Bolt Buyback” program GM quietly created in response to the recall of all their 2017- 2019 Bolts, Chevy paid $37,900 to buy this car back from us. Learning to install solar with GRID Alternatives in 2009. They then sold us a brand new 2021 Bolt EV Premier for $28,500.

Among its first announced customers, back in December 2017, was Pepsi, which reserved 100 of the trucks and plans to use them in the California regions of Modesto and Sacramento. Many were covered in detail during a day of presentations and site visits for partners and media held this past August in Ontario, California.

While OEMs and utilities continue to define and refine hardware standards and communication protocols for smart charging, a tremendous amount of work needs to be done in preparing both the grid and the process to accommodate the expected influx of plug-ins, and to make the process as easy as possible for consumers. —Peter Darbee.

If someone only spends $100 with me yearly to charge their vehicle at one of my high-speed chargers, I’m still probably going to see in the neighborhood of an additional $400 or $500 in home charging.
