The annual assessment of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the JRC and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) confirms that CO 2 emissions have stalled for the third year in a row. Emissions from international transport (aviation and shipping) contribute another 3% to the total global GHG emissions.

The new EU law will require that all carmakers achieve a 100 percent cut in CO2 emissions by 2035 for all new cars sold, eliminating the possibility that gas or petrol-fueled engines can be sold in any of the 27 countries in the EU. Along with the 2035 ban, the EU plans to cut 55 percent of CO2 emissions for all new cars sold from 2030 on.

Average carbon dioxide emissions per kilometer continue to fall in Europe, according to preliminary figures released by the European Environment Agency (EEA). The average CO 2 emissions for these cars was 135.7 Portugal, Malta and Denmark had registered the most carbon-efficient cars on average, with emissions of 125g CO 2 /km or less.
