Electrify America selected Long Beach and the Wilmington neighborhood in the city of Los Angeles as its second “Green City” investment. The Green City investment is part of Electrify America’s commitment to invest $800 million in California over ten years.

Electrify America plans to install 30 electric fleet-dedicated chargers paired with battery energy storage systems (BESS) at the Port of Long Beach, California, as part of Electrify America’s $25-million “Green City” investment in the region at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

The rule builds on progress achieved by the At-Berth Regulation adopted in 2007. Tankers docking at the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach must also comply starting in 2025, while tankers in Northern California have until 2027. Auto carriers will need to comply starting in 2025.

The LIGHTS partners advised EV fleet adopters to build in extra time before the vehicles themselves are scheduled to be delivered—because a large electric truck without the ability to charge it is little more than a parking-lot paperweight. Meanwhile, participants in the LIGHTS Project expect to continue experimenting with electric trucks.

New vehicles to be deployed include 55 CNG vehicles, 363 propane vehicles, 89 hybrid electric vehicles, and 56 neighborhood electric vehicles. The project will replace 180 diesel drayage trucks at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach with LNG trucks. Total DOE award: $12,975,388. Total DOE award: $9,408,389.
