BMW Group Plant Leipzig has brought its second battery module production line on stream. Further expanding e-component production in the German state of Saxony, the new system manufactures modules for the fully electric BMW i4, made in Munich. The BMW Group is launching production of battery components at its plants in Leipzig and Regensburg and expanding its e-drive production network. BMW Group Plant Leipzig will launch series production of battery modules on Monday, 3 May 2021, while BMW Group Plant Regensburg began coating battery cells for high-voltage batteries in April 2021.

The BMW Group is stepping up its activities in the field of sustainability, becoming the first automotive manufacturer worldwide to equip its cars with tires using certified sustainable natural rubber and rayon, a wood-based material used to strengthen the tires. The BMW iX for release later this year will also feature FSC-certified wood.

As part of its electromobility expansion, the BMW Group is deepening its existing business relationship with Ganfeng Lithium based in Jiangxi (China). The two companies have signed a 5-year (2020 - 2024) supply contract for the lithium needed as a key raw material for battery cells. The projected order volume totals €540 million.

The BMW Group has pooled its years of experience with battery cells and extensive knowledge in the field in a new Competence Center in Munich. —Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. The BMW Group is investing a total of €200 million in the Competence Center and employees 200 people there.

Recently the BMW Group signed a cobalt supply contract with Moroccan mining company Managem Group ; the contract has a volume of around €100 million, said Andreas Wendt, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Purchasing and Supplier Network. Cobalt is an important raw material for electromobility.
