Volvo Cars is tripling electric car manufacturing capacity at its plant in Ghent, Belgium as it prepares to meet fast growing demand for its Recharge line-up of chargeable cars. The plant already builds the XC40 Recharge, the company’s first fully electric car, as well as a plug-in hybrid version of the XC40.

Following the introduction of the XC40 Recharge and now the C40 Recharge, Volvo Cars will roll out several additional electric models in coming years. By 2025, Volvo Cars aims for 50% of its global sales volume to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids.

The all-electric Volvo C40 Recharge is available online via volvocars.com in select markets across Europe as of this week. The propulsion system consists of twin electric motors, one on the front and one on the rear axle, powered by a 78 kWh battery that can be fast-charged to 80% in about 40 minutes.

Polestar, the electric performance car brand jointly owned by Volvo Car Group and Zhejiang Geely Holding, unveiled the Polestar 2 electric fastback in an online reveal from Polestar’s headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden. Polestar 2 will make its first public appearance at the Geneva International Motor Show next week.

A new Polestar electric car is destined to replace the Polestar 2 , the EV that started it all. Unveiled in 2019, the Polestar 2 put the brand on a new path toward becoming an all-electric automaker. The Polestar 2 is the brand’s first fully electric vehicle after the Polestar 1, a hybrid with up to 78 miles of electric range.

Meanwhile, Volvo suggested the US-bound EX30 could come from Belgium as it looks to avoid newly introduced tariffs. The EX30 is “one of the best-selling fully electric cars in Europe” in its first few months on the market, according to Björn Annwall, chief commercial officer and deputy CEO at Volvo Cars.

Late last year, Volvo launched its very first all-electric model in North America. The launch model, with a 78 kWh battery pack and two motors providing all-wheel drive, is the high end of a range that will eventually include less expensive models with only front-wheel-drive and/or a lower-capacity battery, at prices in the low 40s.
