TAE Technologies , the world’s largest private fusion energy company, has spun-out a new subsidiary, TAE Power Solutions. The proprietary technology platform is derived from fusion research, and is a foundational step toward mass onboarding of electric vehicles and deployment of intermittent renewable energy as dispatchable power.

In September, GM’s plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt (2,851 units sold) and Toyota’s plug-in hybrid Prius PHV (1,652 units sold) continued to lead sales in the US of plug-in vehicles from major OEMs. The battery-electric Nissan Leaf followed with 984 units, a decrease from Sep 2011, but its best performance since then.

GM posted sales of 4,244 Volt extended range electric vehicles in the US in the second quarter, representing an 8.4% Nissan, which sold 3,539 units of the LEAF battery electric vehicle in the US in Q1 (a 104.2% Toyota followed with 2,353 units of the Prius PHV plug-in hybrid electric vehicle sold in Q1, up 158% year-on-year.

The City of Indianapolis will upgrade 425 non-police-pursuit sedans in its muncipal fleet to plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles by early 2016, cut the size of the fleet by 100 vehicles, and save $8.7 million over ten years. The Indy fleet would be the largest municipal fleet of electrified vehicles in the US.

GM sold 2,633 units of the Volt extended range electric vehicle in December, up 72.2% While Toyota took second place for the year, with 12,750 units of the Prius PHV plug-in hybrid, it dropped to third place in December with 1,361 units of the PHV. All TMS hybrid sales in 2012 totaled 327,413 units, up 83.3% to 512 units.

Ford Motor Company is tripling production capacity of its electrified vehicle lineup through 2013 to more than 100,000 units, further boosting volumes of its C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid ( earlier post ), which begin production next year. Both battery packs are being designed in-house by Ford engineers.
