While electric cars do have to be plugged in (and plug-in hybrids can be), this is not the case for standard gas-electric hybrids. Gas is the primary fuel; the batteries recharge as the vehicle moves and brakes, but the electric power is an auxiliary motive source, so the car will need less fuel. This is untrue.

From here we headed inland to the wildflowers and topped up the battery at Three Springs on a 3-phase power outlet while we had coffee and home-made vanilla slices at the local café. We ended up driving to Carnarvon at 70kmph so we could make it without running out of battery. Range is very dependent on speed as we learned.

The regenerative brakes (the system that puts electricity back into the battery when coasting or stopping) had a progressive feel, producing straight and true stops. The 2021 Sonata Hybrid comes in three trim levels of Blue, ES and Limited. Clean Fleet Report was driving the highly optioned Limited, which had the standard solar panel roof that charges the 12-volt and hybrid batteries, producing two miles of electric driving range for every six hours the car is left in the sun.
