Initial sales of the 2014 Cadillac ELR extended range electric luxury coupe ( earlier post ) will begin in January in all major US metropolitan areas. With an all-electric range of about 35 highway miles (56 km), and a total range in excess of 300 miles (482 km), the ELR offers fuel economy of 82 MPGe, Cadillac estimates.

Fletcher is responsible for the Extended Range Electric Vehicle propulsion system in the Chevrolet Volt as well as the propulsion systems in GM’s upcoming line-up of Plug-In Hybrid Elecrtic Vehicles. The small electric motor and lithium ion battery provide more power and give the car a little “boost”, under heavy accelerating.

The auto industry should play a central role in the energy discussion, Akerson noted, because light-duty vehicles account for about 60% of total transportation energy usage in the United States. The new Cadillac ATS is lighter than a comparable BMW 3-Series. GM, said Akerson, is doing a much better job optimizing mass efficiency.
