Umicore, a global materials technology group, is a pioneer in the recycling of rechargeable batteries; its battery recycling plant in Hoboken, Belgium, has an annual capacity of 7,000 tons of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries and battery production scrap, the equivalent of 35,000 electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

De Lijn, the public transport operator (PTO) in the Flemish part of Belgium, is ordering 44 new articulated plug-in e-hybrid buses; further, the operator confirmed the upgrade of 280 if its current hybrid buses into e-hybrids. The main advantage of e-hybrid buses over regular hybrids lays in their battery capacity.

ABB will supply 4 charging stations to Charleroi and 8 charging stations for Namur. Battery recharging takes 3 to 4 minutes with opportunity charging. The buyer is public transport company TEC Group. The charging stations will be delivered by ABB. Delivery and installation will get under way this autumn.

MAN, a member of the Volkswagen Group, is now selling a battery-electric van, the MAN eTGE. For around ten years, MAN Truck & Bus has been working on innovative concepts for supplying and removing material in the urban environment. A 40 kW charging station fills a battery up to 80% in 45 minutes.
