The Franche-Comté region and La Poste (the French postal service) are testing hydrogen fuel cell range extender kits from Symbio FCell in three Renault Kangoo Z.E. The range extender systems are adapted to the specifications of each battery-powered vehicle model, making this a non-intrusive, integrated hybridization solution.

Put another way, the fuel cell technology is being developed so as to work as components in the MQB (transverse) kit, the development of which is led by the Volkswagen brand, and the MLB (longitudinal) kit being driven by Audi. Meanwhile, outside the stack the electrons supply the electrical power. ( Earlier post.)

If you build a car as a "kit car" with no real factory, then yes, it will never be an economic success.
