In November 2009, Capstone introduced a prototype range-extended electric supercar using one of its 30 kW C30 microturbines as the generator unit. The diesel-fueled Capstone microturbine produces ultra-low emissions and requires less maintenance than the traditional combustion engine found in today’s hybrid-electric vehicles.

Initial sales of the 2014 Cadillac ELR extended range electric luxury coupe ( earlier post ) will begin in January in all major US metropolitan areas. With an all-electric range of about 35 highway miles (56 km), and a total range in excess of 300 miles (482 km), the ELR offers fuel economy of 82 MPGe, Cadillac estimates.

During the serial media launch events for the Chevrolet Volt, GM provided more detail (subsequent to the completion of related patent work) on the novel drive architecture applied in their first extended range electric vehicle to enhance the efficiency of both the battery electric and extended-range driving modes.

Newer EVs have larger battery capacities, allowing for longer ranges and protecting against performance losses. Plug-in hybrids can mitigate cold weather concerns as they are also gas-powered for extended range. This may be an important feature for drivers in rural areas who routinely drive long distances.

Rather than using battery power, the application allows owners to start the Volt remotely to pre-condition the interior temperature using power from the grid. This preserves the battery charge for driving without gasoline. The Volt is an electric vehicle with extended-range capability.
