Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Materials Science and Engineering, is using an aluminum-foil-based anode in a solid-state Li-ion battery to create batteries with higher energy density and greater stability. The new battery system is detailed in an open-access paper in Nature Communications.

The discovery, published in Nature , challenges the conventional belief that lithium metal batteries fail because of the growth of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) between the lithium anode and the electrolyte. The findings could pave the way for bringing rechargeable lithium metal batteries from the lab to the market.

The Electric Car Corporation Plc (ECC) today announced the launch of the UK’s first 4 seater, ‘all electric’ production car. ECC expects to produce around 500 C1 ev’ies over the next 12 months, rising to between 2,000 and 4,000 units in 2010, dependant upon demand and government support.
