After spending the past year and a half converting a Porsche 914 to an electric vehicle, I decided to expand my horizons by designing an open-source electric vehicle (EV) conversion kit for a commonly used car. All the commercially available freeway-capable (70 mph) EVs are priced way out of reach for the average consumer.

Since no renewable energy resource is available 100% of the time, you will probably need to incorporate a backup generator to supply an AC-input charger, but the good news is that this generator can be a lot smaller than if it were sized to power the house directly, because the inverter and storage battery will handle the peak power demands.

Out in the desert as part of Burning Man , our encampment, Snow Koan Solar, is setting up a solar photovoltaic EV Charging Station (at 7:30 and Desert) for electric scooters, golf carts, sofas and barstools. We'll also be taking Burning Man art projects off petroleum generators by switching them to solar electricity.

Think has even shown a convertible prototype. Tax credit incentives are also available to consumers in the U.S. They are either glorified golf cart city cars like this one or they are only for the very wealthy like the Tesla. market for sustainable “green” energy purchases. Electric cars a still a joke.

April 10, 2009 10:06 pm Link I make, convert and drive EV’s and have for 13 yrs. But it would have made EV’s better for 10 yrs until now had they been available. Used Cell phone tower battery takeouts are inexpensive and available about everywhere if you call around. — Jeff U 6.
