GM says it is working to reduce the amount of time the switchover from grid to car power takes, but that it will inevitably be slower than home battery solutions (which can respond in only a couple seconds, or even less than a second) because those stay continually energized, whereas the car requires more communication and a wake-up process.

While it’s not cheap, the EV9 comes loaded with equipment and technology to help justify a circa-$100K starting price when it arrives in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2023. It will get the smaller of the two available battery packs (with 76.1kWh of capacity) and get a single electric motor driving the rear wheels.

Electric cars and a smart electric grid have a bright future, according to panelists at a roundtable discussion on the subject that I attended last Friday in Boston. “I Vehicle-to-grid is, I believe, the salvation of the automotive industry in the United States,” declared Marc Spitzer, an agency commissioner who was also on the panel.

Granted, the recently-arrived Tesla Model Y makes just as much sense, but it wasn’t available as we were pulling this test together. None of this quartet is cheap, but all are towards the value end of the EV market. It’s an unbranded system designed in-house by Tesla, but it’s a quality bit of audio kit.

Furthermore, changing the battery pack on say a Toyota Prius often costs a fortune, at least in most European countries, so such cars better be VERY cheap, but they’re not. Wind, hydro, DC transmission lines, and smart grid electronics are also Portland strengths. — Larry 4. I even tow a trailer for lumber, ect with mine.
