GM is bringing back the Hummer brand as an EV within the GMC brand. A new model provides a fresh start but as an unknown quantity needs heavy promotion to get traction in the crowded auto market. Perhaps the first electric sub-brand was BMW’s i series, which included the i3 hatchback and i8 plug-in hybrid sports coupe.

Battery is under 10kWh: Currently only five PHEVs would not meet the proposed 10 kWh threshold: Toyota Prius Prime (8.8 kWh) Hyundai IONIQ PHEV (8.9 kWh) Kia Niro PHEV (8.9 But all of these PHEVs have batteries of around 9 kWh and so they could easily be upgraded to 10 kWh to qualify for the tax credit.

BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen have all not shipped certain electric models to the US and Toyota is shipping the majority of their RAV4 Prime PHEVs to Europe and Asia. The base version of the Kia Niro, for example, is a hybrid but it also comes in PHEV and BEV version. That would still leave eight automakers without an EV.

According to the Asian auto industry gurus at ZoZo Go , it’s the strongest product debut in the history of four-wheeled vehicles. The Mini EV (no relation to the MINI brand owned by BMW) comes in two- and four-seater versions. Clair, Michigan, that will build complex battery enclosures for the all-new 2022 GMC Hummer EV.

Probably the most needed and least controversial proposed change is the elimination of the phaseout of the tax cap that begins in the quarter after a manufacturer sells 200,000 BEVs or PHEVs in the US. But all of these PHEVs have batteries of around 9 kWh and so they could easily be upgraded to 10 kWh to qualify for the tax credit.
