General Motors is working with communities such as San Francisco to develop a plan of action to establish the supporting technical and policy infrastructure required for broad commercialization of plug-in electric vehicles such as the upcoming Chevrolet Volt. The US Department of Energy has closed its $465 million loan with Tesla Motors, Inc. The Palo Alto facility will assemble electric vehicle battery packs, electric motors, and related electric vehicle control equipment, both for Tesla’s own electric vehicles and for sale to other automobile manufacturers. Three years ago, the magazine Popular Mechanics even wrote an article prodding the auto industry for not building the 100 m.p.g. Now, of course, Bright Automotive is ready to unveil the IDEA, with the expectation it will have 50,000 ready for sale in 2013. Bright is planning to sell its IDEA to commercial businesses only.
