The US Department of Energy’s ARPA-E will hold a workshop on “Applied Biotechnology for Transportation Fuels: Meeting Today’s Energy Needs by Maximizing Photon Capture” on 2 December 2010, in Arlington, Va. Venkat Devarajan , a former Rao student who is now an EE professor at UT Arlington. During his tenure at UT Arlington, he advised more than 100 graduate students. He received a Ph.D. Lasting Legacy.

Separately, ARPA-E will hold a “ Power Technologies ” public workshop on 10 February in Arlington, Va. The workshop seeks to develop new directions in methods, components, and systems related to electrical energy conversion. There is an attendance fee to defray the costs of the workshops.

Later this year, the University of Texas Arlington ’s Epsilon Mu Chapter plans to hold career development events for students. Chapter officers say they will use the grant money to enhance their résumé-building and interview-preparation workshops and to present a discussion about technology by industry representatives.

An NREL report summarizing the 2011 Alkaline Membrane Fuel Cell Workshop noted that: In comparison with PEMFCs, AMFCs offer the advantage of avoiding Pt or Pt group metal (PGM) electrocatalysts, one of the primary limitations in the commercial deployment of fuel cells. … An alternative is the alkaline environment of the AEMFC. 2011.04.043.
