And the entire industry is facing up to the essential nature of charger interoperability: the idea that every car must connect with every charger, with zero hassle, just as internal-combustion cars can pull up to most any pump. To Tesla's credit, I've never failed to hook up successfully to a Supercharger, in America or Europe.

For the standard version, Tesla plans to use a battery that can recharge at a typical 220V outlet in about four hours. Earlier this month, researchers from MIT said they had developed a process that within three years could lead to electric car batteries able to recharge in as little as five minutes. Individuals and businesses lose months and connect fees when they add solar and other forms of renewable energy to the grid. So while my car is powering the great city during the day how will I have juice to drive home at the end of the day? The current electrical grid is poorly designed for distributed generation of power.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. So, Cut the Volt, but Cut the Corvette and Camaro, and America will be GREENER and Better Off! The car is expected to cost around $40,000. Call it the EV2?
