Its efforts to incorporate alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) into its fleet began in 2002 with an initial purchase of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), mainly the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape hybrid. In 2010, the city converted 15 Toyota Prius hybrids to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

The long-time knock against “green” cars, trucks and SUVs is that their sticker prices do not justify the gas savings. The point we make is that it is not just about fuel. the Ford Escape Hybrid is compared against the conventional, gasoline-fueled Ford Escape. Tax credits matter.

There are four drive modes of Eco, EV, Sport and Green Zone. Eco is best when on the highway to maximize fuel economy and Sport for when an extra boost of performance is needed.

Several municipalities in the Boston area have already added hybrids or alternative fuel cars to their fleets such as Lexington, Natick, Newton and Waltham.
