The deal includes an order for three of Wabtec’s FLXdrive battery locomotives and a collaboration to test ammonia as a potential clean, alternative fuel to replace diesel. Among the advantages of ammonia is the fact that it allows the locomotive a longer range than other carbon-free fuels.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has selected 25 cost-share projects under the Clean Cities program that will be funded with nearly $300 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Selected projects, by size of award, are: State of Wisconsin’s Wisconsin Clean Transportation Program. Total DOE award: $15,000,000.

This “Clean Alternative Fuel Vehicle and Engine Conversions” (CAFC) rule, created a special category, known as Outside Useful Life (OUL), which applies to heavy-duty diesel engines with more than 435,000 miles, or more than 22,000 hours of operation, or are more than 10 years old.

Conversion systems allow vehicles to run on alternative fuels; most conversions involve switching gasoline or diesel vehicles to operate instead on a gaseous fuel such as natural gas or propane; an alcohol fuel; or electricity. Fuel cell technology is on the verge of becoming a practical alternative to burning gasoline.

The clean diesel program’s goal is to improve air quality by decreasing emissions from diesel-powered transit bus and school bus fleets. The program supports projects that re-power or retrofit fleet vehicles to curb emissions; purchase and install idle-reduction technology; or purchase clean alternative-fuel fleet vehicles.
