Shoppers considering a BYD Atto 3 , Cupra Born , Hyundai Kona Electric or even Tesla Model Y would be wise to first sample this little Volvo.

Volvo has unveiled its EX90 large SUV, a pure electric replacement for the seven-seat XC90. On paper, the 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Ultimate seems like a fine compact EV. Quirky” is an adjective that’s been applied to Volvos in the past, in ways both good and bad, and it certainly applies here, though the quirks are more confounding than fun. Props to Volvo for that. But the price tag is a bit off-putting.

Volvo has some of the most aggressive goals when it comes to brand-wide electrification, and the new C40 Recharge is a big step in its electric charge towards zero emissions. Its official name is the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric, and it’s available as either a single motor or dual motor (the latter is called the Twin).

The slightly-raised ride height, paired with the high belt line, low roof, and stubby tail are unusual design choices, though Polestar’s sister company Volvo was not often known for (P1800 aside) stunningly beautiful exterior styling. The interior, too, unsurprisingly reminds of modern Volvos. I don’t love the look of the Polestar 2.

As well as new models from heavy EV hitters such as Tesla, BYD, Polestar and Volvo, there will be a raft of traditional brands jumping on board the electric car race. The mid-sized SUV is expected to be priced from below $60K to provide a tantalising alternative to the Tesla Model Y. Toyota, Volkswagen and Subaru are chief among them.
