The luxury Lexus LS 600h L hybrid is the worst offender. It comes with more than $17,000 in forced features compared with the conventional, base model Lexus LS 460L. The Honda Insight, conversely, has no forced features, delivers more than 40 miles per gallon, and emits relatively little global warming pollution.

Conversely, the Toyota BZ4x, which had claimed second place in March (with 1,016 units), seems to be suffering from international logistics irregularities (à la Tesla-of-old), and was back down to 225 units (and 12th spot) in April. Further down the rankings, the new Lexus RZ delivered its first 16 units to the German market, the only new BEV model to appear this month. This is arguably Europe’s most affordable fully-competent BEV, so its fast climb to 11th is no great surprise. With the demise of the i3, the iX1 is now BMW’s most affordable BEV.

In its first year on sale the Polestar 2 outsold the Audi A4/A5, Lexus ES, Mazda6, Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Passat and Hyundai Sonata. Conversely, big guns such as Toyota, Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, Isuzu and Subaru didn’t sell a single EV between them – and Ford logged one of its upcoming E-Transits as sold in 2022.
