Competing in the premium midsize SUV category, the 2021 Cadillac XT5 is right in the middle of stiff competition, including models from Acura, Audi, BMW, Genesis, Infiniti, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Tesla and Volvo. We were surprised to cross the 30 mpg mark for this 3,915-pound, five-passenger midsize SUV.

In 240 miles driving around Southern California we averaged 23 mpg, but in a 100-mile run with the adaptive cruise control set at 65 mph, we averaged 31.2 mpg, exceeding the EPA figure. Running on unleaded premium, the EPA has rated the fuel economy at 19 mpg city/25 highway/21 combined. We are familiar with this engine as it was in the 2021 Genesis GV80 we reviewed earlier.
