ORNL researchers use stop-light cameras to reduce fuel consumption of less-efficient vehicles via traffic management

Approximately 6 billion gallons of fuel are wasted in the US each year as vehicles wait at stop lights or sit in dense traffic with engines idling, according to US Department of Energy estimates. Such camera systems do exist—including one produced by GRIDSMART , a company located just a few miles from the ORNL campus in East Tennessee.

USDA, FAA and other partners extend partnership agreement on aviations biofuels for five more years

The federal government and its partners hope to support the annual production of 1 billion gallons of drop in aviation biofuel by 2018. Southeast Partnership for Integrated Biomass Supply Systems (IBSS) led by the University of Tennessee is using switchgrass and woody biomass to produce butanol and aviation fuel.
