The California Air Resources Board released a new draft of California’s Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Strategy to significantly reduce the near-term climate impacts of these potent pollutants. Methane is the most abundant of the short-lived climate pollutants in California.

ARB will hold a one-day workshop to discuss ARB staff’s preliminary thoughts and sources of information upon which to base the proposed standards and test procedures on 18 May, 2010, in El Monte, California. This new program will be aligned with forthcoming changes to the Advanced Clean Cars automaker regulations, as well as the SB 375 program—the Sustainable Communities and Climate Protection Act—which requires regional GHG reductions through land use and transportation planning.

Assembly Bill 32, signed in 2006, set California’s initial goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020 and directed CARB to develop a climate change scoping plan—to be updated every five years—detailing specific measures needed to reach the target. Making the transition to cleaner, lower polluting near-zero and zero-emission vehicles is a critical component to addressing California’s clean air and climate challenges. With the announcement of Energy Commission funding for additional stations, California is slated to have 51 public hydrogen refueling facilities on line by 2017.

Under the proposal ( earlier post ), California transit agencies would be required to purchase 100% zero-emission buses by 2040 as they gradually phase out their dependence on buses that pollute the atmosphere. CARB staff is still collecting comments , and had originally planned an April 2018 workshop to discuss a revised proposal.
