The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) has produced hydrogen gas using electricity generated from tidal energy in Orkney. EMEC said that this marked the first time that hydrogen has been created from tidal energy. ITM Power won a competitive tender to supply a system to EMEC back in 2015.

The Nikkei reports that Toyota will begin sales of its new hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV), reportedly named Mirai, in Japan in December. The company had earlier said the fuel cell sedan would be on sale in Japan before April 2015, and in the US and Europe by summer 2015. Fuel Cells Hydrogen Japan' Earlier post.).

Toyota plans to introduce a hydrogen fuel cell car by 2015, according to comments made by vice president Masatami Takimoto in response to a question during a shareholders’ meeting at Toyota headquarters. A hydrogen-powered version of Hyundai’s Tucson sport utility vehicle has already appeared in southern California showrooms. In August 2014, Hyundai’s ix35 fuel cell model was driven a record distance for a hydrogen-powered production car on a single tank, covering 435 miles across three Scandinavian countries.

The Toyota Highlander Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle – Advanced (FCHV-adv) ( earlier post ) achieved an estimated range of 431 miles on a single full tank of compressed hydrogen gas, and an average fuel economy of 68.3 Currently, hydrogen gas pricing is not fixed, but DOE targets future pricing at $2 to $3 per kilogram.
